Toll and e-vignette
In Romania, the toll payment system is significantly different from the practice in neighboring countries, as not only highways but the entire road network is subject to charges. The fee must be paid in a single sum, meaning there is no option to pay separately for a Romanian e-vignette and other road usage fees.
The combined highway e-vignette and road toll is called “rovinietă”, and its purchase is mandatory for all vehicles—regardless of the route or planned road section. The rovinietă is therefore a mandatory road toll that must be paid for every vehicle, whether you use highways, main roads, or secondary roads.
The rovinietă must be valid from the moment you enter the country. Online payment must be made before starting your journey.
Purchasing a Romanian e-vignette online
The fee for road usage rights is paid online. Vehicle registration takes only a few minutes. The required details are as follows:
- License plate number
- Nationality mark
- Chassis number (VIN)
- Email address
- Mobile phone number
The price of e-vignettes valid for different time intervals can be calculated and displayed with a calculator, based on the vehicle's basic data entered.
⚠️ Warning regarding suspicious websites
In recent years, several websites have appeared that seem official and promise rovinietă purchases, while actually collecting bank card data or do not send the purchased road usage authorisation (e-vignette).
In such cases, unsuspecting travelers can suffer multiple disadvantages: firstly, they have no valid e-vignette—which can result in fines; secondly, their card data may be misused.
⛔ Penalties
The legislation (OG 23/2025.) specifies in detail the penalties that may apply if someone enters a toll road or expressway without valid payment:
- Passenger cars, minimum amount: 500 RON (~100 €)
- Freight vehicles, minimum amount: 1140 RON (~225 €)
ℹ️ Further information
Please prepare your vehicle registration certificate in advance for the purchase, as—in contrast to other countries—in Romania, you must also provide the vehicle's chassis number (VIN) during registration. The payment (registration) confirmation must be sent to the customer by SMS and email.
The system requires an email address and a mobile phone number for contact. Providing your mobile number is important because the confirmation link will also be sent by SMS, ensuring that you receive the confirmation even if email delivery is hindered for any reason.
Here, via the customer portal, the necessary road toll payment confirmation can be obtained online within a few minutes. This confirmation is then registered at the CNAIR - National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration of Romania headquarters.
